Terms of Service
These Terms govern your use of Spendit — a personal finance app made in Canada. By downloading, installing, or using Spendit, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use Spendit.
What Spendit is (and isn't)
Spendit is a personal finance management (PFM) tool. It helps you:
- Automatically track transactions from linked bank accounts
- Set savings goals and monitor your progress
- Participate in weekly spending challenges
- Receive AI-generated coaching insights and weekly briefs
Spendit does not hold your money. Spendit does not move money in or out of your accounts. See Section 5 for what "read-only" means in practice.
Eligibility
To use Spendit, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have the legal capacity to enter into a binding contract
- Be a resident of Canada (Spendit is currently designed for Canadian users)
- Not be prohibited from using Spendit under applicable law
Your account
To use Spendit, you create an account with an email address and password.
- You are responsible for keeping your account credentials confidential.
- You are responsible for all activity that happens under your account.
- If you suspect your account has been compromised, change your password immediately and email hello@spendit.ca.
- You can delete your account at any time. See spendit.ca/delete-account.
Not financial advice
Spendit is a personal finance management tool, not a financial advisor, broker, dealer, bank, lender, or licensed advisor of any kind.
Any content produced by Spendit — including AI-generated coaching messages, weekly briefs, spending insights, recommendations, challenge suggestions, and projections — is provided for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute:
- Investment advice
- Tax advice
- Legal advice
- A recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any financial product
- A solicitation to invest, borrow, or lend money
- A guarantee of any financial outcome
You are solely responsible for your own financial decisions. Consult a licensed financial advisor before making significant financial choices. Do not rely on Spendit alone for time-sensitive or high-stakes financial decisions.
Read-only account access
Spendit accesses your linked bank and credit card accounts on a read-only basis through Plaid. Spendit cannot:
- Move money in or out of your accounts
- Send or receive payments on your behalf
- Change your account balances or transactions
- Access your banking login credentials
If you see a transaction in Spendit that you did not authorize with your bank, contact your bank directly — Spendit cannot reverse, dispute, or refund transactions.
AI-generated content
Spendit uses artificial intelligence (currently Anthropic's Claude) to generate personalized content. AI output may contain errors, including:
- Misclassifying transactions
- Miscalculating totals or averages
- Suggesting targets that don't fit your actual situation
- Making projections that turn out to be inaccurate
We work to minimize these errors but cannot guarantee accuracy. Always verify any specific figure, calculation, or recommendation against your bank statements or with a qualified professional before acting on it.
Spendit is not liable for financial decisions you make based on AI-generated content.
Your bank connection
By connecting a bank or credit card account through Spendit, you represent and warrant that:
- You own or are authorized to access the accounts you connect
- You will comply with your bank's own terms of service, including any rules about third-party account access
- If you lose authorized access to a connected account, you will disconnect it in Spendit's Settings
Spendit is not responsible for issues arising from your bank's terms — including if your bank restricts or blocks Plaid connections, or terminates your account for third-party access.
Subscriptions and billing
Some Spendit features (Spendit Pro) require a paid subscription. Subscriptions are sold and billed through Google Play Billing. Spendit does not directly charge your payment method.
Free trial
New subscribers may be offered a free trial. The trial length is displayed in the app before you subscribe.
Your subscription automatically converts to a paid subscription at the end of the trial unless you cancel through Google Play at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Automatic renewal
Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly, whichever you selected) at the price shown in the Google Play Store at the time of renewal. Google Play charges your payment method on file.
Cancellation
You can cancel your Spendit Pro subscription at any time through your Google Play Store account. Cancellation stops the next renewal but does not refund the current billing period.
To cancel:
- Open the Google Play Store app
- Menu → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions
- Find Spendit → Cancel subscription
Refunds
Refunds are handled by Google under Google Play's refund policy, not by Spendit. You may request a refund at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Refund eligibility is determined by Google.
Price changes
If we change subscription pricing, existing subscribers will be notified via email and/or in-app notice at least 30 days before the change takes effect. If you disagree with the new price, you can cancel before the change applies.
Lifetime plan
If you purchase a Spendit Pro "Lifetime" plan, you receive access for as long as Spendit continues to operate. This is not a guarantee that Spendit will continue to operate indefinitely — if Spendit ceases operations, no refunds are provided for the Lifetime purchase.
Prohibited conduct
When using Spendit, you agree not to:
- Use the app for any illegal purpose, or in violation of any Canadian or provincial law
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code of the app
- Interfere with or disrupt the app or the servers/networks it runs on
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of Spendit's infrastructure or another user's account
- Use automated scripts, bots, or scrapers to collect data from Spendit
- Impersonate another person or misrepresent your identity
- Provide false or misleading information
- Connect a bank account you do not own or are not authorized to access
- Use Spendit to launder money, evade taxes, or commit fraud
We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these rules.
Intellectual property
Spendit — including the app, its code, its brand, its content, and its design — is our intellectual property, protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws.
You get a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Spendit for your personal, non-commercial use, subject to these Terms.
You retain ownership of the data you provide (your goals, categories, chat messages). By using Spendit, you grant us a limited license to process that data solely to provide the service.
Termination
You can stop using Spendit at any time by deleting your account (Settings → Delete my account).
We may suspend or terminate your account if you:
- Violate these Terms
- Use Spendit in a way that harms other users, us, or third parties
- Fail to pay for a subscription (Google Play manages this — your subscription lapses if payment fails)
- Fail to comply with applicable law
If we terminate your account, we will (where reasonably possible) give you notice and a chance to export your data first.
Disclaimer of warranties
Spendit is provided "as is" and "as available." To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express, implied, statutory, or otherwise, including:
- Warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement
- Warranties that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or accurate
- Warranties about the availability or accuracy of financial data received from Plaid or your bank
- Warranties about AI-generated content
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. In that case, our warranties are limited to the minimum permitted by law.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Spendit and its operators (including its founder, employees, contractors, agents, and successors) are not liable for:
- Financial loss you incur from acting on information provided by Spendit
- Errors in data received from Plaid or your bank
- Interruptions to service, including bank connection outages
- Loss of data due to service failures (though we take reasonable steps to prevent this)
- Indirect, incidental, consequential, special, punitive, or exemplary damages
Our total liability for any claim relating to Spendit is limited to the amount you paid to Spendit in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the claim. If you paid nothing, our liability is limited to CAD $100.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Spendit and its operators from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from:
- Your use of Spendit in violation of these Terms or applicable law
- Your violation of any third-party rights, including intellectual property rights
- Any content or data you provide to Spendit
- Your breach of your bank's terms of service
Governing law and disputes
These Terms and any dispute arising from them are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles.
You agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ontario for any disputes. If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest of the Terms remain in effect.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you:
- By email, at least 30 days before the change takes effect, and
- Via an in-app notice on your next launch after the change goes live.
Continued use of Spendit after the change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the new Terms. If you don't agree with the new Terms, you can delete your account before they apply.
